After successfully completing the Diagnostic Medical Sonography B.S. program at Eastern International College, many graduates seek out a specialty area as they begin their job hunt. In the diagnostic medical sonography field, there are quite a few specialties for professionals to pursue. Outlined below are just some of those options.
OB/GYN Sonography
When most people think of the word, “ultrasound,” they think of what an obstetric sonographer does. In this specialty, a sonographer will perform ultrasounds on the patient’s pelvic region to determine the presence of or gather information about a fetus. A gynecologic sonographer, on the other hand, will take ultrasounds of that same region for reasons unrelated to pregnancy, such as detecting ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids.
Cardiovascular Sonography
Currently, the aged population is at its highest level ever in the course of human history, and it’s the result of a rise in life expectancy. Consequently, there’s a growing demand for cardiovascular sonographers. Medical professionals in this specialty use ultrasounds to assess heart health, as well as the health of the vascular system as a whole. That means they’ll look at the heart and circulatory systems to help diagnose and treat patients.
At EIC, our Diagnostic Medical Sonography B.S. program includes two courses in adult echocardiography. As a student, you’ll learn the elements of a normal echocardiogram, adult cardiac scanning protocols and various modes of cardiac scanning. Vascular Sonography
Vascular sonographers use sophisticated diagnostic ultrasound imaging machines to produce images of a patient’s veins and arteries. The images reveal vascular blood flow, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and other factors. Physicians will use the images to diagnose disorders of the vascular system.
Abdominal Sonography
As an abdominal sonographer, you’ll be tasked with taking ultrasounds of the abdomen’s organs and soft tissues. Looking at the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas and gallbladder, the ultrasounds are used to detect and diagnose kidney stones, pancreatic cancer, liver disease and an array of other conditions.
