Medical Assistant Program - Certificate
Objective
To instill within each student the clinical and administrative skills necessary to succeed in the medical office.
Program Description
Medical Assistants are vital personnel in a medical office, hospital or medical center. Trained to assist in administrative, patient care and laboratory functions, medical assistants can certify in many specialized areas.
Performing venipunctures, conducting EKGs and assisting during in-house surgical procedures are all components of Medical Assisting training. MAs can prepare patients for x-rays, position patients for procedures, and administer some oral and injected medications.
Given that they are able to function behind the scenes of patient care, many medical assistants act as medical office laboratory technicians. With their laboratory skill training, MAs can analyze blood or urine, conduct routine microscopic analysis, and perform many laboratory procedures in an "in-house" laboratory.
Medical Assistants can perform administration functions such as medical billing, transcription, and record maintenance. Reception room management, triage of injured patients and patient flow duties complement an MA's patient care and laboratory skills.
Graduates will receive a certificate in Medical Assisting, and can be employed as entry-level Medical Assistants. They will be thoroughly prepared for employment in a doctor's office -- both general practice as well as a specialty practice -- hospital, emergency room, clinic, and other health care facilities. EIC graduates will be qualified to effectively perform tasks assigned or delegated by a supervising doctor in both front and back office procedures.
